Along with agriculture, animal husbandry and dairy activities have remained an integral part of human life since the dawn of human civilization. These activities have contributed not only in food stuff and animal power but also in maintaining the ecological balance. Agriculture and animal husbandry play an important role in generating gainful employment in rural areas, especially among landless, small and marginal farmers and women, besides providing cheap and nutritious food.

The livestock sector has emerged as an important sector to ensure a more inclusive and sustainable agriculture system. Growing population, changing lifestyles, increasing urbanization and accelerated climate change are creating new challenges to bovine breeding systems. More than 80% of rural households keep livestock in their households. About 35% of the income of small and marginal farmers comes from dairy and animal husbandry. In dry areas this income is 50%. This sector has the potential to generate employment in rural areas with minimal investment as compared to other sectors. In the light of the potential, contribution and role of the sector in the states, a policy needs to be followed for the desired development of the livestock sector.
Bhartiya Pashupalan Nigam Limited is a public limited company in the private sector. It was established in the year 2009 in the name of Indian Animal Husbandry Development and Research Institute Limited. In January 2011, after obtaining permission from the Government of India, it has been converted into a corporation. The working area of the corporation is the whole of India. The Corporation has been registered by the Jaipur Office of the Registrar of Companies, Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Government of India in pursuance of Section 23(1) of the Act 1956 (1 of 1965) vide corporation number U01407RJ2009PLC029581. Its registered office is located in Jaipur.
