About Chhattisgarh Police
Chhattisgarh emerged as a new state on the map of India on 1st November 2000 & this is how old the history of the Chhattisgarh Police as a separate entity. Traditionally, Chhattisgarh has been a very peaceful tribal belt. However, the upsurge of Naxalism in the hilly and difficult terrain of the State poses a big challenge to the enforcement & development agencies today. Since inception, elevan new revenue districts viz., Sukma, Kondagaon, Narayanpur, Bijapur, Balod, Bemetara, Gariyaband, Balodabajar, Mungeli, Surajpur & Balrampur have been carved out to supplement the administrative efficacy, making a total of 27 districts in the State.
Shri SM Shukla, IPS, the first Director General of Police took pride in bringing up the infant PHQ, Shri OP Rathor, IPS, the 5th DG Police, with an eight long years of experience in the United Nations, contributed a lot besides being instrumental in establishing a ‘Counter Terrorism & Jungle Warfare’ School at Kanker. The 6th Director General, Shri Vishwaranjan, IPS added new dimensions to the Chhattisgarh police ushering in the era of police modernization and all-round professionalism. His extensive experience of serving the Intelligence Bureau for more than 20 years helped the state manifolds. Other DGsP namely Shri RLS Yadav (2nd DGP), Shri VK Das (3rd DGP) and Shri Ashok Darbari (4th DGP), Shri Anil M Navaney (7th DGP), Shri Ram Niwas (8th DGP) also helped in overcoming the initial problems of the department.The present DGP Shri AN Upadhyay, IPS, the 9th in 14 years has been putting immense efforts to raise the standards of Chhattisgarh police in all aspects.
